Thanks, Ann Marie! It wasn't what I'd expected on my first visit to Santorini, but it turned out to be a pretty amazing experience. And as you say, now it's taken on a whole new level of meaning for me. For one thing, I feel a special connection to a place over 9000 km away.
I'm glad you enjoyed the article. I'm a bit of an introvert but yes, I'd definitely go back in the low season again. It was really busy and full of people, even in September. I would have liked to book a boat and go across for a volcano viewing, which they were still doing at that time, although I don't know if they'll be doing that these days. Also, I'd love to see the medieval city of Oia, and the archeological dig that was thought to be the lost city of Atlantis. There's so much to see on Santorini! (Plus, now I have my Atlantis Books guide map to help me out! LOL)
It certainly was! It's odd how you can stare at that view and not really understand that you have an active (if mainly dormant) volcano on your doorstep. When we started hearing about the earthquakes in the news, I immediately looked for news about the volcano. Travel is all about making new connections, with places as well as people.
That happens more than I would have expected. My plans are so often eclipsed by the experiences that come up naturally, just by being there. Right-time, right-place, sometimes.
What a beautiful experience, and it takes on more meaning now with the volcano getting active!

Well done! Despite the motion sickness, I'm glad we went. It turned out wonderfully.
Thanks! I feel lucky I don't suffer from motion sickness. I'd love to spend a few more days there, for sure.
Thank you for sharing your experience. Would you go back? This island is on my bucket list.

I agree! And the fact that my son animated it.
So amazing to see it past and present
