Online is good for so many things, but smelling and tasting food over the web is something we still haven't mastered. This article has whet my appetite (pun intended) and when I start planning my next trip, a visit to Blackfriars will certainly be a contender.
As an aside but prompted by reading this. If I look back on my travels, it's amazing how often an article or TV program about some relatively small experience has led to my planning an entire trip around it.
I agree, Glenda -- being able to attend the class in person was a game changer for me. I gained a new hobby in cooking medieval, a new friend in Ann Marie and the others in the course, and new experiences in Northumberland. Let us know if you do manage to visit Blackfriars. I'd love to hear about your experiences!
I can highly recommend a class at Blackfriars. Not only does it offer great classes, I ended up making several friends there. And isn't that what international travel is all about?
Thank you, Betty! Both Marie and I have done more than one class there and it really is an experience. I'm bringing my English students there for a cooking class in May and Marie will repeat the medieval class in September.
Thank you for the reminder! And you know, I actually did see it and even read it, but put off commenting and then it got lost in the shuffle. I had switched to only getting posts on the app, but that didn’t work for me. I’ve gone back to email now, which I think I will manage better. I’ll get back to it now that it’s in my notifications.
Thanks, Jill! It was a grand adventure, and I'm heading there to do it again this September. I've also taken a one-day course there, and I know others who have taken some of the other cooking classes. All have been worth it, by all reports.
My classes there have always been memorable -- a genuine historical site, where kings once dined, professionally organized classes, great food, and a chance to make new friends.
Love that the co-authors met at a cooking course!

I loved learning how you met! I had imagined that you had known each other much longer. And the restaurant is beautiful. What a great story!

BTW, did you see our last post? It was the one I wrote about France. https://open.substack.com/pub/travelandculture/p/befriending-someone-who-doesnt-speak?r=49wr9r&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

How interesting to learn Blackfriars has so many kinds of classes. The photograph of the banquet hall was magnificent. What an adventure!

Every visit a different and grand adventure. Such elegant plating!
LOL - nice pun!
Oh dear. I think the pun just hopped and skipped over my head. Can you enlighten me?
